CBSE Supplementary Exam Guide: Who Can Appear and How to Prepare
What the CBSE supplementary (compartment) exam is, who can usually appear, when it's held and a focused plan to pass or improve in a few weeks.
The supplementary exam, formerly called "compartment", lets students who didn't pass a subject appear again without losing the year. It's usually held in July.
Who can appear
- Class 10: usually up to two subjects
- Class 12: usually one subject
CBSE sets the exact eligibility and any improvement options each year. Check the latest circular on cbse.gov.in, and apply through your school (or directly, if you're a private candidate) within the dates.
A 4–6 week plan
- Week 1: list the chapters by weightage and identify your weakest.
- Weeks 2–3: NCERT plus previous year questions for each chapter, highest weightage first.
- Weeks 4–5: full timed papers, strictly self-marked.
- Final days: formula and key-term sheets, plus sleep.
Find the chapter weightage for your subject on the weightage page, and practise the board questions free.
