Sleep and Diet During Board Exams, What Actually Helps

Simple, sensible sleep and food habits for the board exam period that help memory, focus and energy, and what to avoid the night before.

How you sleep and eat affects how well you remember and focus. Nothing fancy is needed.

Sleep

  • 7–8 hours a night, especially in the final weeks.
  • A consistent schedule: wake up around the time you'll need to on exam days.
  • No all-nighters before a paper. Tired recall is slower and less reliable.
  • Screens off 30–45 minutes before bed, if you can.

Food

  • Regular meals. Don't skip breakfast on exam days.
  • Light on exam mornings: familiar, home-style food.
  • Water through the day, plus a bottle at the exam.
  • Fruit, nuts and curd as snacks, rather than heavy fried food or lots of sugar.
  • Caffeine in moderation. Too much tea or coffee can disturb sleep.

The night before a paper

Light revision from your sheets, a normal dinner, and bed at a reasonable hour. A rested mind recalls much better than a tired one.
