How to Improve Writing Speed and Handwriting for Board Exams

Practical drills to write faster and more legibly in CBSE board exams, plus answer-format tricks that save time without losing marks.

Students often know enough but run out of time. Writing speed improves with the right kind of practice.

Drills that work

  • Timed answer writing: pick a 3-mark question and give yourself 5–6 minutes. Repeat daily.
  • Full papers on paper: at least one per subject per week in the final two months.
  • Comfortable pen: find one that doesn't smudge or tire your hand, and use it in practice.

Format tricks that save time

  • Points instead of paragraphs where the question allows.
  • Underline key terms rather than rewriting them for emphasis.
  • Short introductions in long answers: one line, then straight to the points.
  • Diagrams can replace several lines in Science and Geography.

Legibility beats beauty

Examiners need to read your answer quickly. Keep letters clear, leave space between answers, and number each answer clearly. Neat doesn't have to mean slow.
