How to Make Notes for Board Exams That Actually Help You Revise

How to make short, effective revision notes for CBSE boards, covering what to include, formats for each subject, and how to use them in the last month.

Good notes are short. Their job is to help you revise a chapter in 15 minutes, not to copy the textbook.

What goes in

  • Key terms and definitions exactly as NCERT phrases them
  • Formulas, reactions and derivation outlines
  • Diagrams you must draw, with the labels
  • Your common mistakes from practice and tests
  • Previous year questions that surprised you

Formats by subject

  • Maths: a formula sheet per chapter plus 2–3 "trap" questions.
  • Science: a one-page chapter summary, labelled diagrams, and equations with conditions.
  • Social Science: point-wise summaries, dates, map items and causes/effects tables.
  • Accountancy: journal entry patterns and formats (ledger, balance sheet, cash flow).
  • English and Hindi: writing formats, word limits and literature character notes.

Rules that keep notes useful

  1. Write them after you understand the chapter, not while you're learning it.
  2. One page per chapter where possible.
  3. Add to them after every test: mistakes are the most valuable note.

In the last month

Revise from notes plus your error log, not the textbook. Then test yourself with previous year questions to check you really remember.
