How Many Hours Should You Study for Board Exams? (Class 10 & 12)
Realistic daily study hours for CBSE Class 10 and 12 at different stages of the year, and how to make each hour count with active practice.
There's no magic number, and toppers vary a lot. But focused time matters far more than hours logged.
Realistic ranges
| Stage | Class 10 | Class 12 |
|---|---|---|
| School term (Jul–Nov) | 2–3 focused hours after school | 3–5 hours |
| December–January | 4–6 hours | 5–7 hours |
| Final weeks / holidays | 6–8 hours | 7–9 hours |
These are focused hours, with the phone in another room. Ninety minutes of real practice beats four hours of half-reading.
Make each hour count
- Active over passive. Solving questions and writing answers beats re-reading notes.
- Blocks of 45–60 minutes with 5–10 minute breaks.
- Hardest subject in your freshest slot.
- Track it. A daily goal and streak keeps you consistent. BoardPrep's free tracker does this.
Signs you're overdoing it
Falling asleep over books, poor recall the next day, and frequent headaches. Cut back, sleep 7–8 hours, and keep short exercise breaks in the day.
