Which Stream After Class 10? Science, Commerce or Humanities

How to choose between Science, Commerce and Humanities after CBSE Class 10, with what each stream involves, the career routes and the questions to ask yourself.

Your Class 11 stream shapes your next two years and opens certain routes. Choose based on interest and aptitude, not just marks or what friends pick.

The three streams

StreamTypical subjectsLeads naturally to
Science (PCM)Physics, Chemistry, MathsEngineering, architecture, data and computing, pure sciences
Science (PCB)Physics, Chemistry, BiologyMedicine, allied health, life sciences
CommerceAccountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Maths or Applied MathsCA, CS, finance, management, economics
HumanitiesHistory, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Economics and moreLaw, design, media, civil services, social sciences, psychology

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Which Class 10 subjects did I enjoy, not just score well in?
  2. Do I want a specific course (for example engineering or medicine) that needs a specific stream?
  3. Am I choosing this because I want it, or because others expect it?

Maths matters

If you took Maths Basic in Class 10, you usually can't take Mathematics (041) in Class 11, though Applied Mathematics is allowed. Check your school's rules. See Standard vs Basic.

Schools set their own criteria

Many schools allot streams based on Class 10 marks, especially Maths and Science for the Science stream. Ask your school early.
