Time Management in a 3-Hour CBSE Board Paper (Section-Wise Plan)
A section-wise time plan for 80-mark and 70-mark CBSE board papers, with tips to avoid running out of time and keep 15 minutes to check.
A 3-hour paper is 180 minutes. Plan to use about 160–165 for answering and keep 15–20 to check.
80-mark paper (for example, Class 10 Maths or Science)
| Section | Questions | Target time |
|---|---|---|
| A: 1-mark (MCQ and assertion-reason) | 20 | 20–25 min |
| B: 2-mark | 5–6 | 15–20 min |
| C: 3-mark | 6–7 | 30–35 min |
| D: 5-mark | 3–4 | 35–40 min |
| E: 4-mark case-based | 3 | 25–30 min |
| Checking | 15–20 min |
70-mark paper (for example, Class 12 Physics, Chemistry or Biology)
The marks are fewer but the questions are deeper. Spend roughly 2.2–2.5 minutes per mark and keep the same 15-minute buffer.
Rules that keep you on track
- Don't get stuck. If a question passes double its target time, leave space and move on.
- Glance at the clock after each section, not after each question.
- Attempt everything. Partial answers can still earn step marks.
Practise the timing
Timing only becomes automatic with full papers. Take one timed paper per subject per week in the final weeks. BoardPrep's free mock generator makes a new one each time.
